  • Bye vacation mood - hello adult life 💙
After some magnificent days in Croatia life has us back - in all it's to-do-list-galore🤪
Apart from daily business I plan some really important MADAME FACTION business upgrades AND we are - drum roll please! - going to be moving in a new apartment during the next months!
🤯Am super excited and a little anxious of the upcoming amount of work but in the end I'll be living in a dream of Hollywood-Regency interior ⭐️ (try to visualise a flat Emilie Flöge would share with Marlene Dietrich 💥).
🤗How is your summer going? Are you #TeamBeach or #TeamMakingPlansAgain currently?

  • Off duty. Off line.
See you in August les chéris 💙

  • 🦞 Surrealism beyond Borders 🦞
My article on the @tate Modern's fabulous exhibition is out!
📲 Hit the link in the bio to read my review of the Tate's new anthology of Surrealism - and to read why Donna Summer' sexy "I feel love" is the perfect match for Dalí's sexy "Téléphone Homard" 💥

  • 🚪Let's talk Surrealism!🚪
Thanks for your numerous votes yesterday! When facing Picasso most of you voted for Cubism (a purely logical vote!) but in yesterday's case it's THE painting showing Picasso's flirt not with Cubism but with the Surrealists 😉
🖼However THIS masterpiece here, the "Armoire Surréaliste" by Marcel Jean, does not even need the tell-all title to tell you everything about the family it belongs to!
Painted in a perfectly ILLUSIONARY style Jean seemingly offers us a window to another world. And he does. It's just that this window opens a purely unreal world: The painting pretends to be a 3-dimensional wardrobe, with its closet doors open.
💙But inside the closet one does not find any fancy clothes but the blue sky. And it's not even 'only' the sky, it is two landscapes painted one on top of the other - separated by grey clouds. And as soon one comes closer to the artwork one can clearly see the Surrealist trap: The painting is a wardrobe with flat, closed doors, the open doors are painted.
⭐️It is this specific play with different layers of reality that has always INTRIGUED me: Art, that pretends to be something else. Art, that opens to a DIFFERENT world.
🏛Find this magnificent work currently on display at the wonderful exhibition #SurrealismBeyondBorders at the @tate modern in London.
🪄Stay tuned for more unreal stories and my article on the show!

  • 🖼 Let's talk about Art 🖼
As I have already announced on Monday this week I am concentrating on avery special Art direction. My question for you is: Which art chapter could it be?
Take a close look at this painting and you'll be able to guess it.
And I do have another hint for you: It's not about Picasso - although it's clearly a Picasso 🤪

  • ⭐️Kicking off the week with charisma & style!⭐️
📜Last week I published my favorite style stars from the @tate Britain.
🎨And of course when talking about style portraits one can not ignore #JohnSingerSargent! His portraits were realistic, but also dynamic and glamorous and made him very successful amongst the uprising Bourgeoisie in Europe. Sargent hardly ever portrayed melancholia, but rather opted for vibrant charisma, joy and glamour.
🖼And speaking of the new Bourgeoisie we of course have to talk about the Wertheimers! Asher Wertheimer, a member of a family of middle-class British Jews, was a very important art dealer and commissioned Sargent to paint 12 portraits of his family.
🎀Hylda - the portrayed lady here - was the 3rd daughter of the Wertheimers. Her portrait stands in the grand tradition of the old masters and - with its will to show how noble the young lady was dressed and how glamorous ‘her’ interiors were - had of course very important functions: To not only show the social status of the depicted but also to grow this status. It was supposed to create this status simultaneously.
🔎Talking about social status we HAVE to add one thing: Look at the “pince-nez”, located on the nose of Hylda. While she wears it with pride Sargent seemingly tried to convince her not to wear it while posing. But obviously the young lady was pretty keen on to look well-read (rather than ‘only’ beautiful) and thus underlined her own values, which is – needless to say – incredibly FACTION.

📲Read more about the art of portraying intelligent glamour with the link in my bio - by Sargent but also by other important British artists.

  • ⚜️New article alert!⚜️
Amongst the many paintings in the many halls of the Tate Britain there was ONE portrait, that particularly captured me:
⭐️The Duchess of Argyll painted by Gerald Brockhurst⭐️
🖤The paintings’ cool symmetry, its harsh color contrasts as well as the duchess’ confident glance are the exciting elements of this masterpiece.
🤍But who was this young lady? Well, Margaret Campbell, born Ethel Margaret Whigham, was the daughter of Scottish self-made millionaires, the debutante of the year (watch out, dear Bridgerton fans!) and was much admired for her beauty and style (her wedding dress is said to have blocked London’s traffic for hours back in the days!).
📲Read everything about this femme fatale with the link in my bio!
➕️… and of course to discover more adventurously stylish biographies as hers.
💄Because walking through the Tate Britain not only offered vast collections of British Art but also revealed two secret ingredients of many of the portrayed: Style and Charisma! So come with me for a walk via my blog and enjoy my favorite six masterpieces portraying intelligent Glamour!

  • ⚜️It is such intriguing portraits that I am currently looking at: Figurative but yet modern portraits, revealing curious characters and splendid as well as scandalous lives ⚜️
🎨John Singer Sargent, the painter of this famous double portrait, was one of the grand portraitists of the late 19th century, who made a wonderful career as well as a lot of money with loads of commissions.
💥But because of his figurative style he was ignored by art historians for a long time. It was specifically his brushstroke, that was criticized to be too easy and therefore too superficial. What for me looks like an individual interpretation of Impressionism was described to be too quick and therefore dull.
⭐️Stay tuned for more details on his painting style and the methods he had to reveal the character of his sitters!

  • Coucou les chéris! This week it's all about the fashionable ladies from the @tate Britain 💄🎨🎀
⚜️Here are some of my favorites of the many fascinating women and women portraits from my recent visit to the London museum.
📚Currently I am diving into the (style) biographies of the portrayed as well as the painters - and let me tell you one thing: It's the stuff, Bridgerton-, The-Crown- and Downton-Abbey fans are dreaming of.
⭐️Stay tuned for their fascinating stories coming soon!

  • ⭐️It's a special day today⭐️
... and so many of you have already written me and sent me the most FACTION wishes - thank you 💙
🎀I am spending my birthday by just being the flâneuse I've always loved to be. Taking a bath, reading fancy books, strolling through Vienna's old town, and just enjoying the day ⭐️

🎂Do I love birthdays? YES of course - and always will! Who invented this adults-shouldnt-celebrate-birthdays-anymore?!
⚜️Do I have a problem with my age? Nope, am embracing 38 like I embraced 21.
🥀Do I long for the past? Well, sometimes. But aren't we all a little nostalgic for easier times?
💙Do I love my life just as it is? YES, I do.
🎀Do I see see some wrinkles? Of course, but wtf. Life is complicated. And I've eagerly traded an easy life for an ambitious one long years ago.
⭐️Am I the same person as I was 15 years ago? Of course not. But i still feel somehow the same - as if I've never changed 💙

📲Watch out for my article on this intriguing chapter of Fashion History coming tomorrow!

  • 🤔What comes into our mind when thinking of menswear?🔍
Probably a suit 👨‍💼Grey, black or blue 🖤 Well cut ✂️ A three-piece if it gets exciting 🎩
🎀Well, let me tell you one thing: While there IS great 'classical' suits, Men's Fashion used to be so much more colourful and fancy prior to this relatively short period of 1800 till recently, when Men's Fashion became pretty black and boring.
⚜️No matter if it's the fashions of the Renaissance, the Baroque Era, the Glam Rock of the 70s or the recent designs of Gucci - Men's Apparel can be really flamboyant!
📲Watch out for my stories showing more of the fancy looks from the #FashioningMasculinities show at the @vamuseum these days. And the article on that exciting chapter of Fashion of course!
